Imaginative Teaching Resources & Inspirational Career Ideas from the Chilled Food Industry
Lizzie Goodman is a Group Technical Graduate at Greencore. She joined the company in July 2016.
What did you study?
After ‘A’ levels in Geography, Chemistry and Politics I went to Sheffield Hallam University to study BSc (Hons). Food and Nutrition.
Did you have a career goal in mind when you were at school?
I’ve always enjoyed food, cooking and baking and was interested in nutrition. Food Technology was my favourite subject at school but I was unaware of potential career options on offer.
I’d undertaken a placement at Warburtons between my ‘A’ levels and University which I enjoyed. My degree included a year out in industry, I worked at Kookaburra spending time in NPD and quality.
I think I would like to pursue a career in auditing however I am enjoying spending time in different departments to decide which career route I would like to take.
What made you apply to Greencore?
I wanted to work for a large food manufacturing company and have the opportunity to see a range of different manufacturing processes.
What does your job involve? Is it fun, interesting?
Greencore employs two technical graduates each year and we get the chance to move around the company including two placements within Greencore. I’ve visited many of our different sites.
I spent my first year with Greencore as a specification technologist which involved validating raw material specifications. I have recently moved to our Selby site where I will be spending time within different functions including QA and process.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about Food Science as a career?
I’d say go for it, there are so many opportunities and you can move around to find out what suits you best. You can shape your career as you go along. My colleagues all tell me how they have moved around and are often not where they’d expected themselves to be.
Find out about what placements are on offer, my hands-on experience was very important to me, especially since I’d not studied very much science at University.
What are the best bits?
Everything! It’s really not what I expected – but in a very good way.
Describe your chilled career so far in one word…..
Exciting!
