Indoor Fireworks

This time of year we might be seeing fireworks outside – but how about some indoor ones? These are safer and you don’t have to stand in the cold to enjoy them!

All you need is a tall glass, small bowl, lukewarm water, oil and food colouring.

Fill the glass with the water.  Add one tablespoon of oil to the small bowl and add a drop of food colouring.  Mix with a spoon until the food colouring is mixed into smaller drops in the oil. Repeat with another tablespoon of oil into another small bowl and add a different food colour and mix again.   Pour the coloured oil mixtures into the tall glass and watch!

The Why

The food colouring sinks slowly in the glass with each droplet expanding outwards looking like fireworks. The food colouring dissolves in water but not oil.  When we pour in the mix of oil/food colouring the oil floats at the top of the water because it is less dense.  The food colour will dissolve once it sinks through the oil and into the water.
